Every #NewMusicFriday, I pick a bunch of the best-sounding new albums so you can get your audiophile music fix!… As usual, it’s a very eclectic mix (Albums are arranged with more traditional audiophile genres like Jazz and Blues at the top, and the non-traditional audiophile stuff towards the bottom). (TIDAL streams below)
My Album pick of the week is a project by Nigerian musician/vocalist Femi Kuti, and his Son Made Kuti, the Son/Grandson of Afrobeat (not to be confused with the newfangled Afrobeats) Pioneer Fela Kuti. The album is called “Legacy +” (Listen via Amazon Music HD-30 Day Free Trial), and it’s aptly titled because they clearly carry forth the torch of their forefather, displaying all the complex rhythms, energy, and political messages that are integral to the genre.
This of course is nothing new for Femi Kuti. I saw him at the JVC Jazz Festival in New York City almost twenty years ago, and it was one of the best performances I have ever seen! He and his amazing background dancers danced and sang almost non-stop for a couple of hours! They blew the roof off the Apollo Theater!
Check out Femi and Made’s latest music video below, along with a short video introduction to their prestigious progenitor Fela Kuti.
