Vinyl Revival: Embrace the crackle and pop (in a good way!) with a turntable like the Audio-Technica AT-LPW40WN ($319). Its light carbon fiber tonearm and removable cartridge let you enjoy pristine analog sound while staying wallet-friendly.

Stream beautiful tunes on a Budget: Don’t sacrifice convenience for quality. The WiiM Pro Plus Multiroom Streamer ($219) provides access to just about every wireless streaming service via Wi-Fi, letting you lose yourself in a world of music without breaking the bank.

  1. As an audiophile since 1971, I can confidently state that never before have so many good sounding choices at every price level been available. It truly is an “embarrassment of riches”. That said, when the budget category is considered, I somewhat disagree with the choices made here. Not that they are bad choices, they are all fine equipment. In fact, I own the Triangle BRO 3 speakers and IMO, they’re all they are claimed to be. Wherein these lists fall short is in a failure to discuss what comes after the major purchases.
It is the norm when a list of equipment is suggested, to leave out the necessary accessories, such as speaker stands and cabling. Hardly ever, if ever is an upgrade path suggested. Much less tweaks that may and often do raise the fidelity substantially. Therein lies my objection to a turntable, to get the best out of any turntable requires a substantial outlay in ancillary equipment; records must be deep cleaned with a multitude of various purchases to extract the maximum fidelity that analog vinyl is capable of and that, regardless of the particular turntable. CDs are in my opinion also problematic, though to a much lesser degree than vinyl.
Which leaves streaming and the suggestion that the new WiiM AMP/DAC/Streamer @ $299.00 is a true game changer in the budget category. It is however a truism that any equipment that has been built to a low price point has to cut corners. One common area is in the power cord. So replace the WiiM’s cheap power cord with a WIREWORLD Mini-Stratus Power Conditioning Cord/US Wall to C7 IEC. Clean, unrestricted power is essential to getting the most out of any equipment, regardless of its cost.
Then add an iFi LAN iSilencer @ $89.00 to clean up the Ethernet signal. Then add an iFi AC iPurifier @ $109.00 and it will notably raise fidelity. Herbie’s Audio Labs proprietary platinum-silicone micro vibration absorption feet and the Bybee QSE tech. will raise fidelity even higher. The secret to ancillary equipment and tweaks is that they are cumulative in their efficacy. The right speakers for you depend upon room size and our preferences in music. An alternative to the Triangle BRO 3s are the highly rated Micca RB42 Reference Bookshelf Speakers @ $300.00 a pair, ideal for smaller rooms and desktop setups. Reviewer Steve Huff strongly recommends the budget Micca 14 Gauge Pure Copper Speaker Wires @ either $25. or $40. a pr.
Companies like Amazon & Crutchfield offer a 30-60 day returns, so you’re not stuck if you decide that it’s not quite what you’re looking for. Enjoy the journey, it can be as long or short as you wish.
