iFi Audio’s ZEN devices have been excellent options for those looking to get into desktop hi-fi at an affordable price point, and their latest ZEN addition looks to continue that trend. Called the ZEN Stream, it’s what iFi calls a “Wi-Fi audio transport”, which is basically a network music streamer without a built-in DAC.
Music streamers without DACs have drawn tons of interest from Hi-fi enthusiasts, as many already have top-notch standalone DACs (like the iFi ZEN Dac V2) in their systems. A streamer without its own DAC circuitry is thought to provide a purer signal and allows for a cleaner upgrade down the road as Digital to Analog conversion technology improves.
The ZEN Stream offers a future-proof way to add hi-res music streaming, as it has open-source Linux architecture (similar to a Raspberry Pi streamer) that can be used to add features later.
As far as features are concerned, there are plenty that should make it a pleasure to use, like support for 32-bit/384kHz PCM and DSD256 over Wi-Fi and Ethernet plus compatibility with tons of streaming protocols like Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Roon, DLNA, NAA, and Apple Airplay. Google Chromecast is also promised in a future update.
This means you are not dependent on a particular app to play tunes. You can use just about any app that suits you, on any operating system.
It also has dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz), along with a raft of iFi’s beneficial technologies like femto-precision GMT clocks to reduce jitter along with Active Noise Cancellation and iPurifier technologies to remove distortion.
These features make the ZEN Stream a virtual swiss army knife of music streaming, giving you a ton of flexibility over how you bring digital music into your system.
You should be able to access music from your personal NAS drive, or from just about any music service, with very little fuss. This looks like another winner from iFi audio.

| Around the back, alongside the Wi-Fi antenna, reside an array of sockets and ports. Dual-band Wi-Fi reception supports 802.11a/b/g/n/ac for a fast, reliable wireless connection, while a high-grade Gigabit Ethernet port supplies a cabled network option of the highest quality. There’s also a USB-A input, giving the option of playing music from HDD and solid-state storage devices, and a USB-C programming port to upload software/firmware updates (an alternative to OTA updates via Wi-Fi).Two digital outputs – asynchronous USB and coaxial S/PDIF – provide connection to an external DAC or amp with digital inputs. Both these outputs are regulated by iFi’s femto-precision GMT (Global Master Timing) clock circuitry to eradicate jitter from the digital signal. An obvious partner is iFi’s ZEN DAC – an affordable, multi-award-winning USB DAC with balanced circuit design and the same 158x35x100mm aluminium enclosure.
