Amazon is selling the ELAC Uni-fi UB5 Bookshelf Speaker (Black, Pair) for $350 which is $150 off the usual price of $500. The Uni-fi UB5 is the smallest three-way speaker on the market, due to its concentric driver array which features a 1-inch soft dome tweeter positioned in the center of a 4-inch aluminum mid-range driver. This is a design perfected by speaker designer Andrew Jones during his time at Pioneer/TAD where he used concentric drivers in speakers costing tens of thousands of dollars.
With the Uni-fi UB5, he has trickled down the technology into a speaker costing a fraction of his TAD speakers and to great effect. The Absolute Sound, a publication very serious about 2-channel music reproduction, had the following to say:
With the Debut and Uni-Fi series Jones has cemented his bona fides in the realm of entry-level loudspeakers. And once more—this time with the UB5—he has caused us to recalibrate our expectations for affordable speakers. Like a Michelin-starred chef, Jones is a guy who can grab any handful of ingredients and whip up a five-star meal.
At $500 they could be considered a bargain, but at $350 they are a no-brainer. If you are looking for a great speaker to anchor your budget audiophile system, these are a great choice! Pick them up before they sell-out!
