Mission 750: A New Classic Bookshelf Speaker With Modern Tech

British hi-fi specialist Mission revives the spirit of its iconic speakers with a compact, retro-inspired design

In celebration of its rich history, speaker specialist Mission is introducing a new bookshelf speaker, the Mission 750. This new speaker takes design cues from the iconic British loudspeakers of the 1980s and ’90s, particularly the landmark Mission 770 and 700. These earlier models were known for their compact size and impressive performance and helped fuel the popularity of “bookshelf” format speakers.

The Mission 750 shares the white baffles and vintage logo featured on the classic Mission designs but incorporates modern construction techniques and technologies. At 355x216x270mm (HxWxD), it neatly fits the classic ‘bookshelf’ speaker definition – a format Mission helped pioneer.

Driver Tech for Detailed Sound

One of the most distinctive features of the Mission 750 is its inverted driver arrangement, or IDG (Inverted Driver Geometry). This places the tweeter below the mid/bass driver, aiding in ‘time alignment’ for improved stereo imaging and a more coherent sound.

To deliver accurate and engaging sound, the Mission 750 utilizes a 135mm mineral-loaded polypropylene cone for the mid/bass driver. This material delivers tight, detailed bass with exceptional clarity. The tweeter is a 28mm microfibre dome known for its smooth yet detailed performance. Mission engineers have carefully designed the crossover network, using high-quality components and mapping software to ensure seamless integration between drivers.

Strong Construction, Retro Touches

The Mission 750 features a well-braced, real-wood veneered cabinet that reduces unwanted vibrations and delivers a clean, uncolored sound. The retro-inspired white baffle and vintage-style Mission logo complete the speaker’s classic throwback aesthetic.

While ‘bookshelf’ is the traditional term, the company says the Mission 750 will perform best when positioned on dedicated stands like the Mission Stance to optimize their sound.

The Mission Tradition Continues

Peter Comeau, Mission’s Director of Acoustic Design, explains: “The 750 fits into Mission’s current range as a compact speaker for those who admire the much-acclaimed 770’s retro design and captivating sound but are unable to accommodate it physically and financially…The result is an effortlessly expressive ‘bookshelf’…speaker…that belies its compact size.”

The Mission 750, classically styled yet technically advanced, will be available in walnut or black wood veneer from mid-April. Its RRP is £899 (roughly $1,138) per pair.
