The Album Of The Week is The Maxwell Quartet’s new album, Gather. This great-sounding new project is devoted solely to celebrating the music of Scotland, which the group had already combined with Haydn String Quartets to great applause. This musical pursuit brings together different aspects of Scottish traditional music and transforms them into new musical pieces for a string quartet.

It ranges from music from 1200 to the present day, like a Celtic chant from the Inchcolm Antiphoner, fishermen’s songs, marches from the Western Isles, and Shetland Reels. This new album is an atmospheric representation of traditional music that is played with the Maxwells’ unique and unpretentious style of playing.

This album is amazingly well recorded and a great way to give any hi-fi system a workout.
