iFi Audio Unveils New And Improved ZEN DAC V2 DAC Amp, Available In May

Today, via their official Twitter account, iFi Audio unveiled a new version of its super-popular ZEN DAC USB DAC/ Headphone Amp, called the ZEN DAC V2.

The new model improves upon the original with a more powerful 16 Core XMOS digital processing chip, transforming the new ZEN DAC Dac Amp into an MQA Decoder instead of just a renderer:

As explained on the iFi website:

This enables you to playback MQA audio files and streams, delivering the sound of the original master recording. The LED glows green or blue to indicate that the unit is decoding and playing an MQA stream or file, and denotes provenance to ensure that the sound is identical to that of the source material. It glows blue to indicate it is playing an MQA Studio file, which has either been approved in the studio by the artist/producer or has been verified by the copyright owner.

An MQA renderer like the original ZEN DAC can only complete the final “unfold” or processing of an MQA file or stream after it is handled by MQA compatible software like TIDAL or Roon. It also can’t “authenticate” a track as an original studio recording, a major selling point of the technology.

At a retail price of $159, the ZEN DAC V2 joins the $149 Khadas Tone 2 Pro as one of the most affordable MQA decoders.

The ZEN DAC V2 is now available for pre-order via Amazon.com. Orders are expected to ship at the end of the month.
