Onkyo TX-8470 Review: Is This the Ultimate Stereo Receiver?

Onkyo TX-8470 Review Introduction:

Since I was a young audio salesman in the ’90s, Onkyo has released quality stereo receivers offering a cost-effective foundation for an entry-level stereo system. Now, back from recent bankruptcy and under new ownership, the brand has refocused to provide gear oriented towards hardcore audiophiles, a la Technics. To this end, they launched an impressive new line of high-end audio gear at CES this year.

Today, I’m looking at a new amp launched in late 2024, the TX-8470, a 2-channel network stereo receiver advertised as “built for and by audiophiles”. This Onkyo receiver seems more robust than the ones I have come across in the past, and it combines traditional hi-fi features with modern streaming capabilities, making it a compelling all-in-one offering at the $799 price point.

Design:

The TX-8470 sports a classic receiver design with an “AV receiver” style front panel layout. It features a large volume knob, an input selection knob, tone controls, and an easy-to-read LED display amongst other creature comforts like a USB port and a headphone jack.

While the overall aesthetic is functional and straightforward, some might find the design slightly dated compared to modern minimalist receivers. The build quality is solid, with a sturdy chassis and high-quality components inside and out. In addition, like most stereo receivers, it’s easy to use and the buttons are well laid out.

Features:

The TX-8470 is packed with features that should cater to modern and traditional audio enthusiasts. Its extensive connectivity options include four HDMI inputs with 8K support for TV hookup, an HDMI ARC output, a phono input (MM/MC), digital inputs (optical and coaxial), and analog inputs. The receiver also supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Ethernet connectivity for wired network integration.

All these connections make this receiver a versatile hub that supports high-quality audio from a TV along with digital signals from sources like CD Transports (passed through an excellent 32-bit/768kHz AKM DAC section). In addition, the isolated MM / MC phono board with its discrete circuit provides a quiet conduit for the turntable of your choice.

Another highlight of the TX-8470 is its impressive streaming capabilities. It is Roon Ready certified for fans of the Roon music management software, and supports popular streaming services like Tidal and Amazon Music, providing access to a vast library of high-resolution tunes. You can access these via the free Onkyo App or directly from smartphone protocols like AirPlay and Chromecast (which I prefer). The app also provides access to connected USB Drives and Network Drives. The receiver also integrates with voice assistants like Google Assistant and Apple Siri for convenient hands-free control.

Last but not least, the Onkyo has a Class G amplifier, supported by a high-current power supply. Class G amps are designed to provide the organic sound of Class A models while staying more efficient and providing a higher peak wattage. The 8470 is rated at 110 watts per channel (8 Ohms), ensuring ample power to drive a wide range of speakers. This unit can also handle 4 Ohm loads using one of the TX-8470’s A/B speaker outputs at a time.

Sound Quality:

The TX-8470 excels in sound quality, delivering a powerful and detailed audio performance without being too harsh in the upper frequencies. I tested it primarily using my reference Q Acoustic Concept 300 speakers ($4999). The speakers were set up in their usual configuration about three feet from the front wall, then slightly toed in to form an equilateral triangle with the listening position.

This receiver made the Concept 300’s sing in a way that I’ve only heard with amplifiers costing several times its price. The 8470’s sound signature, which is characterized by nice clarity, dynamic range, and remarkable tonal balance, was on full display no matter the track I played. It handled a multitude of music genres with ease, from delicate classical pieces to energetic rock tracks. The soundstage was wide and immersive, with excellent instrument placement and imaging for a sub $1000 amp.

If I had any issue with the sound it would be a slight lack of separation and depth compared to some of my favorite integrated amps like the Cambridge Audio CXA 81 mk2 ($1199) or the NAD C379 ($1099), but neither one of those have built-in streaming and they cost a bit more. That said, for $799, I haven’t heard an amp with this level of power and refinement. The 8470 is just a joy to listen to.

Onkyo TX-8470 Review: Should you buy it?

The Onkyo TX-8470 is an excellent choice for music lovers and budget audiophiles who value both performance and versatility at a nice price. Its powerful amplification, high-quality DAC, streaming capabilities, and extensive connectivity options make it an excellent just-add-speakers option that comes in at an affordable $799.

However, the TX-8470’s price point may be more of a consideration for extra budget-conscious buyers. In that case, you can take a look at the Cambridge Audio AXR100 at $599, but I think the Onkyo is heads and shoulders above the AXR100 in terms of sound, plus it has a streamer. It’s also not the sexiest-looking amp, but

The Onkyo TX-8470 successfully bridges the gap between classic hi-fi and modern audio technology. It delivers a thrilling audio performance with a wide range of features and connectivity options. While the design may appear slightly dated and the price may be a barrier for some, the TX-8470’s sound quality and versatility make this the best option in the sub-$1000 stereo receiver market.
