Nancy Wilson, one of my all-time favorite Jazz Vocalists, and probably the one who is responsible for my enduring love of Jazz Vocal music, passed away last night at the age of 85. She is responsible for some of the greatest Jazz Recordings of all time, but her album with another Jazz Great, Cannonball Adderley, holds a very special place in my heart.
The album, entitled “Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley”, is a must-have Jazz album that like I said before started my love affair with Jazz Vocals when I was in my twenties. Wilson was also in her Twenties when she recorded this set in 1961, and she swings so hard, playing the perfect accompaniment to the accomplished horns of the Adderley brothers. Her voice is so sweet yet gives no ground to Cannonball’s massive alto sax. She is all business!
